In data 3 maggio 1791 in Polonia nacque la Prima Costituzione Europea. Dopo aver guadagnato l’indipendenza nel 1918, il parlamento proclama 3 maggio festa nazionale.
Nei tempi PRL (Repubblica Popolare Polacca) il governo proibiva pubblici festeggiamenti e finiva con intervento della polizia. Proprio per questo, nel 1951 fu eliminato dai giorni festivi, per poi essere reinserito nel 1990.
Ancora oggi il 3 maggio è un giorno festivo dedicato alla Madonna Regina della Polonia.
